News & Events

Over the past three years, the Social Science Research Council’s Mercury Project has supported 18 research teams worldwide in evaluating interventions to increase evidence-based preventive health behaviors. Now, we are excited to share the policy-relevant and actionable insights emerging from their work—findings that can drive high-impact solutions at scale. Updates will be posted on the site in the coming months.

In a world with rapidly evolving disease vectors, it is critical that individuals are equipped with the resources they need to protect themselves and their families. The Mercury Project has funded over 100 researchers across the United States, Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean to identify scalable interventions that increase evidence-based preventive health behaviors. These insights provide vital tools for policymakers, technology companies, and global health organizations seeking to improve public health outcomes.

With a shared research framework and a strong commitment to impact, the Mercury Project consortium facilitates collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and funders to translate findings into actionable change. Through this work, we can collectively advance data-driven interventions that increase preventive health behaviors and ultimately save lives.

SMS interventions have long been touted as cost-effective mechanisms to stimulate large-scale behavioral change. However, previous research suggests that the effectiveness of SMS interventions hinges on the phrasing and content of the messages themselves. Two Mercury Project teams conducted SMS-based interventions with a shared goal, to increase Covid-19 booster rates in a large sample of Americans, and relied on previous research in behavioral and social science to construct these messages.
