Cataloging evidence-based policy tools

The vast landscape of research findings can be difficult to navigate. In order to ensure that research findings are used by decision makers, those findings need to be organized and made accessible.

Recent research on the uptake of scientific evidence by decision makers reveals the importance of curating, organizing, and clearly reporting scientific findings. For example, decision makers are more responsive to new research findings when given information about the range of estimated effect sizes and the sample sizes used for analysis (Vivalt and Coville 2023). Decision makers are also more responsive to new research evidence when shown estimated effects for multiple interventions side-by-side, and single impact metrics that aggregate multiple outcomes of interest (Toma and Bell 2023).

The Social Science Research Council draws on the research on the uptake of scientific evidence to produce expert reports and online knowledge platforms that catalog the landscape of existing evidence-based policy tools, helping stakeholders navigate and implement cost-effective and scalable policy tools across multiple policy areas.
